Don’t Get Pushed into using the insurance company’s “Preferred” Shop
At Andy’s Auto Service, we work with all insurance companies, but we choose NOT to enter into a contract with insurance companies to be considered one of their “Preferred Shops”.
We know how it goes; you get into an auto accident and you contact the insurance company to submit your claim. This is where things start to get a bit confusing. When an insurance company is paying for repairs, they often try to steer insurance holders to one of their “preferred” body shops.
But what is a “preferred shop” in the eyes of an insurance company? Well, insurance companies contract with automotive shops, promising the shop a steady flow of work in exchange for negotiated labor and material rates, as well as parts discounts. Insurance companies pressure their shops to use non-OEM and/or reconditioned or salvaged parts. This is corner cutting and, in some cases, it’s considered unethical.
Consumers place a lot of trust in their insurance companies to look out for their best interests. What most people don’t consider is that the insurance company’s main goal is to cut costs as much as possible while still retaining policy holders. Consumers are at a disadvantage because they’re not always fully knowledgeable about these practices.
Here is what the law says:
You can take your vehicle anywhere you choose to have it repaired. The insurance company cannot force you to take your car anywhere. To force you to use their “preferred” body shop is called “steering” and is illegal in all 50 states. It’s your car, not theirs…
The insurance company is never our customer. You, the vehicle owner, are our customer. A successful company can’t serve two masters.
